What is new in the world of flooring?

In the world of flooring there are so many new things! I my self think it is amazing all that they can do with carpet. I wanted to highlight one thing that I think applies to the 2020 situation as far as germs go.

Have you heard of  MicroBan? They make all sorts of sanitizing solutions and they are partnered with Phenix Carpet and now there is carpet with MicroBan in it. This is a really cool concept in helping keep your carpet a little more sanitary. I am attaching a link to the Phenix website so that you can look at all they have to say about it.

They have some super cute products too. Not all have the MicroBan but it is something that would be fun to look at. Here are some pictures from the website that you can look at. Maybe it will spark you interest.

Hopefully you found this interesting like I did!

Frequently asked questions about your install... (hard and soft surface)

Image from: GOOGLE  driftwoodpaddleadventures.com/

When getting your carpet installed there are a few things that you should do to get ready for your install.

Soft surface:
Are you taking up your own carpet?  If so, make sure that you take it all up.  The carpet and the pad is the easy part.  When it comes to the staples, that is a bit of a different story. Each of the staples need to come up.  If they do not come up, you can get charged by the installers for prep to get all the staples out of your floor.  If the staples are left it can cause little lumps in your carpet, and we do not want that to happen.  If we are taking up your carpet, please make sure that your floor is clean.  Even though the carpet is going to the dump we have to handle it. If you can have your room empty and the carpet vacuumed that would be wonderful!
Do you have your baseboards on?  Your baseboards should be on before you have your carpet installed.  The baseboards should be 3/8 inch off the floor.  This allows enough space for your carpet to be tucked under your baseboard.  If there is much more than that, you can see the space between the baseboard and the carpet.
When will you be finished painting?  When you get your carpet installed, you need to let the paint cure for 48 hours.  Installers are very careful not to hurt your walls and baseboards but when the paint is not cured it is to soft and can cause there to be more touch up.  If you are painting when the installers arrive, we will not be able to do your install.  So give your paint enough time to cure.
Is your room completely empty? To have your carpet installed, your room needs to be EMPTY.  This is for a few reasons.  The carpet has to be installed wall to wall.  If the installers are needing to pick up a couch or a desk, you can be charged additional to move the object up to 7 times.  This is really hard on the installers and we try to avoid it if at all possible.  If you have things hanging on your walls, I would avoid taking it down just to be safe.  If you are getting your closet done, just make sure that the installers have a area to work in.  If you are getting a whole home installed, come talk to us. You do not need to move everything out of the house, or onto different levels.
Should I turn down the heat for the installers?  You should keep your home at the same temperature that you normally keep it.  If it is to cold, the carpet will relax when the heat is turned back up it can potentially cause the carpet to develop wrinkles.
What do I do if I have radiant floors? Please let us know! We install the carpet and tack strip differently when you have radiant floors.  We also use a different padding that will allow your radiant floor to do what it is supposed to do (and more efficiently that when you use a regular pad).
I think that I have pet stains on my floor, can these be treated?  If you think that you may have any issue with animals in your carpet, you are going to want to take it up and see.  If there are spots, go and purchase some KILLZ PRIMER and paint (or roll) it on the affected areas.  This will seal the issue and help prevent it from smelling in the future.

Hard surface:
Do I need to clean the flooring before it is taken up?  Technically no, although it is a nice thing to do for the installers.
Do you take up and put back toilets? Because there are so many things that can go wrong with toilet placement, it is best to get it done by a professional plumber.
Can I install my new flooring over my existing flooring?  That all depends on what type of flooring you are wanting installed.  Also if it clears doorways etc. I would recommend coming by so we can check the variables.
Does my room need to be empty? Yes, the area that is being installed needs to be emptied.  This will allow the installer to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Can I take up the flooring to save some money? Of course.  Although please let us know what is on the floor so that we can let you know how to take it up properly.
Can I paint the floor before it is installed? PLEASE DO NOT! If you paint the floor when we come to install the flooring (especially glue down) the floor is only as good as the paint.  If the paint comes up, so will your floor.  It just is not a good idea.  The paint would need to be taken up, or sanded off.

There are always different situations that an change the answer to questions.  Please do not hesitate to ask.

Please let us know if you have any questions that you need answered.  Also, where ever you have your carpet installed ask what they would need.  Everyone is different.  We want you to have the best experience that you can have.  Email your questions to johnsonsfloors@gmail.com

New Flooring in a crunch!

One of our amazing customers was caught off guard with how fast her home sold and needed to be installed ASAP! We have a few rolls in stock here so she picked something that she liked.

Carpet is a Grey tone-on-tone ( I know sometimes it can be hard to tell in the pictures)

These are just a few pictures of the job installed and ready for them to move into their new home.

That is the nice thing about being able to have a large inventory of in stock carpet.

Carpet problems...

Carpet has problems here and there like everything else.  Nobody likes it, but that doesn't stop it from happening.  This carpet has a side match meaning the color changes a little through the roll of the carpet.  The problem that this causes is when you seam the carpet together, there is a noticeable difference in the color. The way that you can fix this is by using a serpentine seam and cutting the carpet from the same side of the roll.

This is an obvious eyesore!

And fixed!!

When we first looked at the carpet we were going to have her pick out a new carpet.  She loved this so much that she really wanted to avoid doing that. Problem solved!

Frequent Flyers

This is selfish of me to say but I LOVE (and hate) when my sister moves ( she moves alot). Recently they have been buying homes, living in them awhile.  As they live in them they fix them up. Painting fixing stuff blah blah blah... ( to the good stuff) they replace their flooring.  The last house I got to pick out the flooring and I really enjoyed it.  Not only does it take out of the huge inventory that we have, but it gives me a little bit to pick something fun, affordable, functional, and I get feedback of what they think.  The last home they had they wanted a longer carpet, it was in and a comfortable look.  After living in that house for about a year they realised that with their life style it was something that they liked but not as much as they thought they would.  Now that they built a new home, I got to pick out the carpet again! I must admit that I like the challenge.  She gives me her criteria and I give her some options finally coming up with the final look.

I will get some more pictures so that you can see these better.

Side note... My sister is married and they have a dog.  This carpet is a new magic fresh carpet with a special treatment that they use so that your carpet doesn't smell like anything but carpet ( in this case dog).  Also this carpet is a solution dyed carpet meaning that if you (heavens forbid) spill bleach on your carpet it will retain its color, but the bleach can eat the backing.  Living active life's, maintaining carpet isn't a top priority for most people.  But don't forget that your carpet loves to be vacuumed and maintained.  No carpet is indestructible.

New House New Look

The cutest family came in to our shop looking for some carpet ( weird I know).  They had just purchased this house and were putting a fresh look into it, making it their own. As they were looking around checking carpets listening to us rant about our vast knowledge on carpet we found a piece that they liked. When we went to measure the home we laughed a little bit because we had installed the carpet in the master bedroom when the previous owners had lived there ( such a small world).  The carpet was ordered and installed so this cute family could move into their new home.  Although after it was installed, I loved the carpet so much I had to go look at the job my self and get some pictures to share.  The sad news is I am going to have to invest in a better camera then the one in my phone so I can get better pictures to show off all of the jobs that we sell and the amazing job that our installers do.
Stairway, wood edges and the installers always tailor the stairs to give them a crisp finished look.
(I will have to do a post telling you guys the difference in the ways to install the carpet on the stairs.)

S'more carpet pictures

In the spirit of fall and the delightful change of colors, I felt a change of ink color was in order.  We have done a bunch of carpet jobs but getting pictures is a bit harder than you would think.  I put them up as I get them and as I receive them.  On that note there are some pictures of some carpet that I rather liked.  It was thick and delightful!

The pictures don't do it justice that is for sure, but it is always nice to take a look at the installed carpet and the many looks that it has.

Elegant and Amazing

This formal living room is beautiful.  The elegant pattern that was put in really gives a suttle but not over powering depth to the room, the solid color leaves room to decorate with many different colors.

This is a closer look at the pattern piece installed.  Like I said before I love the way the carpet looks in this room, really pulls everything together with out being over powering.

Pass it along...

To help out our coustomers, we decided to hand out a carpet matitnance forms. As far as I can tell they appreciate it ...
It goes as follows, I hope you find this helpful also!

Carpet maintenance
When getting new carpet or maintaining your existing carpet, there are a few things that need to be made known.

Vacuum Habits:
Rule of thumb for vacuuming your carpet is as follows: Vacuum your carpet as many times per week as you have people and pets living in your household.  So for example if there are 4 people living in a home and the family dog you should be vacuuming your house 5 times per week.  Your carpet loves to be vacuumed.  Stairs and hallways being high traffic areas in your home need to be vacuumed more often.  **In our house hold we offered $2.00 for vacuuming the stairs, if a child needed $4.00 we had them vacuum the stairs two consecutive times just because the stairs need the extra care.**

Carpet Cleaning:
Carpet should be cleaned once a year minimum, although every 6 months is Ideal. When I say cleaned, I mean steam cleaned by a professional.  Steam cleaning your carpet helps maintain the warranty on your carpet.  Please avoid cleaning your carpet chemically.  When you use chemicals to clean your carpet, your carpet has a tendency to stick together making it look matted.

Spot Cleaning:
When a spot gets on your carpet depending on what the spot is, refer to the “Shaw stain center” you can do this a few ways.  There is an app. for the i-Phone, or you can look at the website: http://shawfloors.com/Cms/Home.aspx?DN=ecb3c2bf-7515-4484-9646-fb99065e374c
(An easier way to find this is Google “Shaw stain center” it should be the first site that pops up.)
There is also a number that you can call Stainmaster:  800-438-7668 or Shaw / Anso:  800-441-7429.  This is the most helpful thing to use when it comes to stains; it helps with solutions and ways to dub the stain out of the carpet.

Footwear:
Despite what rumor has or what many of us think, socks are the way to go.  Bare feet walking on your carpet is one of the worst things for your carpet.  When the oils from your bare feet rub on your carpet, the dirt tends to stick to your carpet making it harder to maintain and keep looking clean.  If you have the choice between bare feet and shoes, wear your shoes but socks are the ideal way to keep your carpet looking better longer.

Just For Fun:
Make sure to check out the Johnsons Carpet blog, there we post helpful hints for carpet care and jobs that we have done. Just to further help you understand your carpet.
